Hunting opportunities abound in this region of Nevada. Winnemucca is the perfect jumping off point for your next hunting excursion. Sportsmen come here in search of big game such as big horn sheep, mountain lion and antelope, as well as several types of game birds. Winnemucca’s friendly atmosphere, Basque cuisine and hometown hospitality are here to greet travelers in every season.

Winnemucca- “Chukar Capital of the Country”
Winnemucca, Nevada is the perfect place to make the annual transition from an antiseptic office to the hospitality of the perfect October day.  This high-desert hub sits at the crossroads of Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 95. Idaho and Oregon are to the north, Salt Lake City to the east and Reno and the Bay Area to the southwest.

Winnemucca claims legendary status as the “Chukar Captial of the Country.” There are a few reasons why. Long seasons and liberal bag limits make for more hunter recreation days than any other upland game bird. Plus, only the Great Basin can duplicate the original chukar habitat of India, Pakistan and Afghanistan, the birds’ native countries. Only here will you find the steep, rugged canyons with talus slopes and rocky outcrops that provide a perfect hideout for the birds. When it comes to chukar hunting ~real men’s chukar hunting~ no place does it up better than Winnemucca.

Hunting season for chukar partridge begins the first Saturday in October and runs through January 31 in all 17 of Nevada’s counties. Daily limit is six; possession limit is 18. Hunting licenses are available from any Nevada Division of Wildlife (NDOW) office including the one in Winnemucca, or from local retailers including Reliable Ace Hardware, Raley’s, Wal-Mart, CB Brown True Value Hardware or the NFC Santa Rosa Chevron Station at the turnoff to Paradise Valley. A nonresident one-day permit is $21; each day thereafter is $8. An upland game stamp/privilege is also required for $10. Cost for residents is $33 for a regular hunting license, and $10 for an upland game stamp/privilege.
